Frequently Asked Questions

Who is your typical client?
Many of our clients have recently started a family, or have begun the accumulation stage of their careers.  However, we do serve those approaching retirement or currently in retirement.
Do you work with clients outside of Ohio?
Yes, our services and systems have been designed so that clients can easily work with us from any location that has an internet connection.
What is the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) Designation?
Certified Financial Planners (CFP®) are bound by requirements set by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc..  A CFP® must have a minimum education level of a bachelor’s degree and specific coursework in financial planning.  CFP®'s must pass a comprehensive six hour examination, and must have at least three years of professional financial planning experience before holding the title. CFP®'s are required to maintain their expertise through continuing education.
WHAT IS AN INTRODUCTORY MEETING LIKE?
Initial meetings are complimentary, last about an hour, and are designed to provide you with a better understanding of what we do and what it is like to work with us. Finding the right advisor is like buying a pair of shoes, if you plan to use them, make sure they fit.
Is Hyland Financial Planning a Registered Investment Advisor?
Hyland Financial Planning is a Registered Investment Advisor in the state of Ohio. We comply with government regulations designed to protect the consumer. Registered Investment Advisors are required to follow a fiduciary standard.
Is Hyland Financial Planning A fiduciary, what is a Fiduciary?
Hyland is a fiduciary to its clients. A fiduciary is someone in a position of trust and confidence that must place the interests of those they serve ahead of her own.  While the law is not entirely settled on whether a financial planner must serve in a fiduciary capacity, we believe they do and should. Hyland Financial Planning embraces this role and the responsibility of always placing the client first.
How are you compensated?
As a fee-only firm, all of our revenue comes directly from clients. We don’t receive commissions, referral fees, or other incentive compensation from third parties. This reduces conflicts of interest and provides maximum transparency. See our Fees page for more information.
Do you sell products?
No. As a fee-only firm, we provide advice on purchasing products and managing them if necessary, however we will not be financially involved in those sales transactions to reduce conflicts of interest for our clients.
How do I determine a financial advisor’s competency?
The CFP® is the most rigorous and highly regarded financial planning designation.  Certified Financial Planner's, as well as Registered Investment Advisors are held to a fiduciary standard, which means they must act in a client's best interest. Look for experience and make sure they are providing customized advice.
I'd Like to Learn more, what is the next step?
You can get started by scheduling an Introductory Meeting by visiting our Contact page or by calling (330) 800-0353. We will be happy to answer any questions you have about financial planning, Hyland's services, fees, or philosophy and how these might serve your needs. The initial meeting is complimentary and there is no obligation of any kind. The goal of the first meeting is to learn more about you, your objectives/goals/values, and to determine if we will be a mutual good fit to work together.
